The mûkthno wailî emerged from a pre-human magic that formed as primordial forest gave way to sea, to glacial ice and eventually to peat bog. They were born from the seeds of life and honed by the truth of death. They were already waiting when human consciousness began to shape a need to understand and navigate the journey from being present in the world to being absent from it, from being certain of the future route to becoming lost within a bleak peaty dreamscape. The mûkthno wailî stepped into that need, hunting the marshes, wolf souls travelling in their woman forms…
This new work is formed around the paintings and peat prayers that weave through the long mythic story which sits at the heart of the BOOK OF HAG (Peat), the second in a series that explores and navigates the journey into and beyond old womanhood. The paintings were incubated during five years and created over three long winters; they are larger than life-size because the women themselves arrived uncontained by temporal or spatial realities. They emerged from the marshes on the high moors where Carolyn lives and works, starting to appear soon after the completion of a raised wooden trackway constructed to curve through the valley wetlands. The marsh women, who had surely been waiting for this trackway to be finished, came with their peaty words already threading through the air…
This beautifully produced art portfolio contains 14 full colour images 30 x 20 cms and 13 peat prayers, along with notes and song lyrics. Together they create a mystical route through the primordial marshes from wild life to untamed death; they may be experienced as a contemplative journey during the 28-day arc of a moon or through the turn of winter. Sample images of the paintings will appear on this page after the book launch exhibition, November 22-24.
