Flow is an album of graceful and spacious music, an improvisation created around delicate sounds and deeply resonant wooden flutes, designed for healing journeys and peaceful contemplation. While it was born from the Dartmoor landscape, it honours all the flowing waters of the Earth.
Flow is an album of graceful and spacious music, an improvisation created around delicate sounds and deeply resonant wooden flutes, designed for healing journeys and peaceful contemplation.
Flow was conceived as both a companion to The River (a recording that has been travelling around the world for over 25 years) and a freshly envisioned experience of sacred waters. While it was born from the Dartmoor landscape, it honours all the flowing waters of the Earth.
Flow is a continuous piece of music that journeys for one hour. Washes of natural sound appear occasionally within the instrumental music; as well as archive recordings from Dartmoor, these include the early spring song of the stream at Lower Merripit Farm. Gentle voices, soft piano and subtle percussion are used as fluid prayers to the water.
All the flutes played on this album were handcrafted by Nigel; the music features low and high Oak whistles, Yew, Walnut, Birch, Ash, Cedar and Hawthorn flutes, Walnut and Oak drone flutes. Other instruments include piano, bowls, bells, wind chimes, bowed acoustic guitar and dulcimer, cello, keyboards and nature sounds.
Carolyn Hillyer contributes beautifully layered voices, weaving river words from the ancient Proto-Celtic language. Matthew Birch performs improvised hang drums, a rich melodic percussion instrument.
