Paintings by Carolyn Hillyer
Carolyn has been painting female energy for over thirty years, creating life-size images of archetypal spirit women, ancient mother forms infused with symbolic significance and hidden layers of magic: the primordial landscape in a human shape. She exhibits her work regularly, usually as large installations that combine the images with her music, original story cycles and totemic handcrafted items to offer powerful and direct experiences of sacred and mythological shrines. Her paintings form the bones of the many workshop journeys that she creates and teaches on Dartmoor, in the UK and internationally. The images are usually painted as cycles, circles or councils of women. Each cycle may take several years to incubate, then three or four more years to be fully formed upon the board. Fibre and textiles, woven cloth in its many manifestations, are intrinsic to this process. “I paint life-size because they seem far too wild and huge-of-spirit to be squeezed into smaller shapes. Essentially these women step out from the house of weavers, from where I have sourced so much of my work, their ancient shawls and ragged scraps of blanket billowing around them. Often they are singing as they come, and they always carry stories, described in the symbols and totems that they wear about their forms.”
The paintings may be purchased either as individual prints or as complete sets. Click onto any image to view the images available within each series.
