MERRIPIT PONIES

We have been breeding Dartmoor Hill ponies here at Lower Merripit Farm for over 10 years. Lower Merripit is a thousand-year old farm in the centre of Dartmoor. There have been wild Dartmoor ponies grazing on the hills around the farm for many generations. Although the ponies are wild, each herd is attached to a farm and every year they are brought down from the open moor for a few weeks to be checked and sorted.

The current Merripit herd has been bred from one mare called Lucky, who was orphaned on the moor, saved and hand reared by us (hence her name!). As a consequence our herd is very easy to handle – when other farms are herding in their ponies with quad bikes and riders, we only need to go onto the hills and call Lucky’s name out until the herd comes running and follows us down to the farm. Lucky is a mix of Dartmoor and Shetland but she has been mating with registered pure Dartmoor stallions so her offspring are taller than her. They all carry the sturdy physique of a Dartmoor-reared pony, long ‘ice’ tails and shaggy dark manes with blond ends. Their winter coats are also thick and shaggy.

We are looking for a good home for one female pony. Dartmoor ponies are easy to look after – they prefer to be outside all year and do well grazing on rough land and poor pasture with some extra hay to get them through the winter. They do not require feed mix. Our ponies have all developed a taste for gorse flowers, blackberries and strong mints. They make excellent companion ponies but will also be perfect for bringing on as beginners’ riding ponies.

As a guide, halter trained Dartmoors are being currently sold for £250-£300 but we do not want to ask that much. The financial exchange for these beautiful, friendly animals is open to negotiation – we are more concerned to find good caring homes. If you would like to find out more or to visit the farm to see them please contact us on 01822 880301 or info@seventhwavemusic.co.uk We would be very grateful if you could put out the word to any of your friends who may be interested.
