Travelling the Ancient Trails with Wayfaring Musicians and Pack Ponies
A walk with music and song across the north moor from Postbridge to Gidleigh co-ordinated and led by Carolyn Hillyer, Nigel Shaw and Danielle Earp
Organised as part of the Dartmoor Resonance Music Festival 2018
June 17 Sunday from 8am to 8pm
There will be a very special pilgrimage walk across Dartmoor to celebrate the ancient landscape with music played on traditional and prehistoric instruments, and songs sung by a choir of voices in ancient and contemporary language, led by Wildsong (a collective of Dartmoor women’s voices). Anyone is welcome to join the walk which will move through periods of silence, singing, music, conversation and simple shared honouring at stone circles and monuments in respect of Dartmoor’s ancient people and landscape. This will be the moment in the Resonance Festival programme when our Dartmoor music will be offered to the open land and to an audience of ancestors – rather than to a seated concert space!
8 am Gathering of ponies, musicians, singers and walkers at Postbridge Village Hall. Hot drinks served. Donations for the shared pot luck supper may be left at the hall.
9 am Pigrimage begins. Total distance about 8 – 9 miles over 8 hours with breaks for lunch and resting (bring your own packed food, waterproofs and sturdy boots). Participants are welcome to join us for all or any part of the route; you are also able to meet the troupe on the other side of the moor when we reach Scorhill Stone Circle on our last stop before Gidleigh Village Hall.
4-5 pm Estimated arrival to Scorhill. Final choir and music offerings followed by celebratory procession to Gidleigh Hall.
6 pm Resting and feeding of ponies. Shared pot luck supper and hot drinks, organised by volunteers – all food contributions welcome. Followed by informal fireside music and song.
8 – 9 pm Closing of the Songways pilgrimage. Shared lifts to return walkers to their cars.
If you are interested in participating in this day please email firstname.lastname@example.org with your name; this will help us to have an idea of the expected number of people. Please bring your lunch and snacks, plenty of drinking water and waterproof clothing. You are also welcome to bring your own traditional musical instruments (drums, fiddles etc). Please arrange your own lift shares back to Postbridge.
NOTE: Please do not bring your dog: even if your own animal is well behaved, too many may disrupt the focus and stillness of the pilgrimage, and disturb the pack ponies. Thank you for your understanding.
There is no charge for being involved in the Songways of Dartmoor walk but we will have donation buckets at both ends of the trail to help pay for pony food and transport. Maps of our route will be available on the day. Please contact us if you would like to be a volunteer or steward for this event; all offers are very welcome!
