LOWER
MERRIPIT COTTAGE
Ancient
farm settlement in the heart of Dartmoor's wild land

DETAILS OF ACCOMMODATION
Lower
Merripit Cottage was originally built in the 16th century
as part of the ancient longhouse farm settlement of Lower
Merripit, dating back over 800 years. It is located in the
very middle of Dartmoor close to the small village of Postbridge,
19 miles from Plymouth and 20 miles from Exeter. Lower Merripit
works closely with the Dartmoor National Park to protect
areas of the farm that are rich in rare flora and fauna.
Our growing methods are all organic and we have initiated
an extensive tree-planting programme here over the last
twelve years. Buzzard, heron, tawny owls, badger and other
wildlife are regular visitors here. The stream carries salmon
up to higher spawning grounds.
The cottage is situated in a secluded valley surrounded
by trees, peat land and the open moor. There is a large
garden that backs onto a wild flower meadow. The cottage
sleeps 8 people in 3 twin bedrooms and one double bedroom
(with en suite shower). There is a large beamed sitting
room with huge wood burner and deep granite window seats.
A second smaller sitting room, with big granite inglenook
fireplace (with wood stove and traditional bread oven) serves
as a reading room. The traditional country kitchen has granite
worktops, a stone sink, oven/grill and hob plus dishwasher.
There are extra tables and chairs so eight people can be
seated for dinner. There is also a scullery with washing
machine, tumble drier, extra sink, and space for wet clothes
and dogs. Dogs are welcome by arrangement. There is a downstairs
toilet as well as the upstairs bathroom/shower. A narrow
spiral staircase leads from the hall and a second one from
the sitting room. There is a no-smoking policy within the
building. Where possible we use environmentally-friendly
and bio-degradable products for cleaning and domestic use.
The décor of the cottage is clean, tidy, cosy and
simple - in traditional cottage style.
Lower
Merripit Cottage is ideal for walking and family holidays

retreats.
